Explore Westcliffe

DeWeese Reservoir State Wildlife Area backs up behind an impressive dam at the head of Grape Creek Canyon, just a half-dozen miles north of Westcliffe. The wildlife area encompasses 2,336 acres, with the reservoir covering 208.

Rich with Tradition

The quiet area, home to 200 miles of hiking and biking trails and 54 alpine lakes, has an air of the undiscovered, and you’re likely to spot real wranglers herding cattle on horseback.
Take a peek at All Aboard Westcliffe, a museum devoted to the area's railroad history, and stop for a performance or movie at the Historic Jones Theater. An out-of-the-ordinary site is Bishop Castle, about 28 miles southeast of Westcliffe. Resident Jim Bishop has been building this free and visitor-ready medieval masterpiece by hand since 1969. The optimal location for stargazing

Prefer your constellations with a side of civilization? Located about an hour west of Pueblo, the two towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff were the first communities in Colorado to be recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association. They're also two of the highest altitude International Dark Sky communities in the world. Not surprisingly, the area is home to many passionate stargazers. Soon after receiving certification, the community constructed the Smokey Jack Observatory, where visitors can absorb the full impact of an unobstructed Milky Way through a computer-guided Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. The local International Dark-Sky Association chapter also hosts a series of Star Parties throughout the summer.

Come for the mountains, stay for the stars

Silver Cliff is commonly linked with its sister city, Westcliffe. The two towns are connected and often appear as one. Located on the scenic Colorado 96, southwest of Pueblo, Silver Cliff is part of the Frontier Pathway Scenic and Historic Byway. A notable route once traveled by Native Americans, explorers and homesteaders, Frontier Pathways is today a spectacular driving route.
At 1,250-feet deep, the Royal Gorge in Cañon City is one of the deepest canyons in Colorado and often called the “Grand Canyon of the Arkansas." Cañon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge in 1929. Spanning 955 feet above the river, the suspension bridge is the highest in North America. You can walk across the Royal Gorge Bridge at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, where jaw-dropping views and extreme adrenaline rides await. The Royal Gorge is an easy and scenic one-hour drive from Westcliffe.
